On the new formulation of self-dual nonlinear electrodynamics
Jorge Russo (ICREA, Barcelona and Barcelona, Autonoma U. and ICC, Barcelona U.)
Abstract: An important class of theories of nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED) are the self-dual ones, that is, theories invariant under electromagnetic duality. A well-known example is Born-Infeld theory. Until recently, only a few other examples were known. A new formulation leads to the explicit construction of the most general self-dual nonlinear electrodynamics and leads to the complete solution of the causality constraints. In addition, the construction exhibits in a simple way the connection between causality and energy conditions. A corollary is that there are no regular black holes in any causal NLED with zero cosmological constant.
